In this post, I am going to share with you 5 daily foods that you are eating the wrong way
and the right way to consume them so that we can derive the maximum
benefit out of them.
Hello Friends! Welcome to Fitweb.
Starting with #5 on the list is Roti
Not a day goes by without eating a roti for many of us. It is filling,
nutritive and staple to Indian cuisine. However, frequently people complain about digestive
disorders after consuming roti. A prime reason for this is the way it is prepared nowadays.
Blame it on our fast lifestyle but often we cook it on a tawa for a while and then quickly transfer
it directly on flame until it is said done. This give it an inflated look and also saves time.
Though, in this process, while the outer part of the roti gets properly done but from the inside,
it remains half cooked. Imagine roasting potatoes this way where the outside part of it looks cooked
even burnt but when you delve into it, you realize its undercooked. Preparing roti in this way tends
to cause bloating and flatulence. This isn’t the traditional way either. Ask your grandmother and
she will tell you that roti was solely prepared on the tawa. No doubt, it takes 2 minutes longer
but then it will not only be evenly cooked but also will be tastier and easier to digest. Wait!
You need not compromise on it’s puffed up look as well. Simply use a cloth and press it on the
sides and watch it getting blow up. Another useful tip while preparing roti is that the more time you
will take to knead the dough, softer and lighter the roti will turn out to be. Often we knead the
dough at the last moment. Avoid this mistake. Its recommended to always knead the dough first,
give it enough to set while you prepare the curry. Kneading the dough with milk and having it with a
savoury dish is asking for skin problems. If your goal is to lose weight, avoid putting ghee on the
roti, add it in the curry instead. These atomic tips will change the game for you and you will get the maximum out of this traditional food.
At #4 is, Red chili powder
Spices are the soul of Indian cooking as they not just add flavour but dissociate theirtherapeutic elements into the food. However, if you often suffer from body heat issues like
excessive sweating, hair fall, premature greying of hair, pigmentation of the skin, you should keep
red chilli powder at bay. Being a strong stimulant and highly inflammatory, if used indiscriminately,
it can cause inflaming problems including peptic ulcers and piles. Red chillies are generously
used in the coastal regions of India like Andhra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu but that’s actually a smart
way to beat the excess moisture that results out of the temperate weather conditions. To replicate
the same in the plains is like using a heater in summers. So does that mean we start eating bland
food? Of course not. Red chillies can be easily replaced with green chillies when making something
like a parantha. In other preparations, red chilli powder can be replaced with black pepper.
Ayurvedic scriptures propose Trikatu churan which is a combination of black pepper,
long pepper and dry ginger. This is an ideal swap of red chilli powder. Try it out and you will notice your body heat reducing.
Next on the list is Banana
Easy on the pocket, always available and an impressive nutrient profile is what makesbanana stand out among other fruits. Its not just easy to eat but has all the ingredients
that you require to recharge yourself physically as well as mentally. However, when I say banana,
I mean the ripened banana and not the one which sells like hot cakes in the markets these days.
A ripened banana is not solid yellow in colour but invariably has small black spots on it.
The stem of a ripened banana is almost black in colour and not greenish. Another indicator
is that an unripened banana won’t be very sweet. Rather, it may be unpalatably starchy and bitter.
The body has a hard time dealing with an unripened raw banana and fails to assimilate the vital
nutrients from it. In fact, if you regularly eat such bananas you are inviting problems like
acidity, bloating, constipation and allergic reactions. So, the next time when you go out
to buy bananas prefer the one with black spots. If you can’t find any, buy them and let them sit for
a couple of days. Once the black spots arrive, its ready to hop on. Its this banana which is not only
a superfood but has a taste that can beat most sweets in the market. Bananas are high in calcium
but do you know what has more calcium? The fibres inside the banana peel. So don’t forget
to scratch them out using a spoon and have along. Banana is considered synonymous with weight gain although if you have 1 banana with black pepper sprinkled on it 30 minutes before breakfast,
it will help cut that extra fat from the body. Banana with ghee and jaggery powder is a natural weight gainer. So, its not the food on paper but the way it is eaten that makes all the difference.
At #2 is Onion
Onion has a long list of curative benefits attributed to its name but have you wondered why then it is never consumed on a fast? Why some people completely abstain from it? Well, that’s because of its Tamasic nature.
To put it simply, the inherent property of onions is to promote lethargy. As an
experiment on a given day consume gobhi parantha and then the next day have onion parantha,
you will significantly feel your energy levels dropping in the latter case. However,
be sure that it is significantly less stimulating than garlic. While onions in moderation promote
memory when consumed daily they can reduce the concentration power and promote feeling
of anger and agitation. So, if you are a student preparing for an upcoming examination or someone
dealing with anger or depression skipping onions for a while might come as a relief. Although,
Indian curries are incomplete without the onion tadka. However when we fry the onions too much
they soak the oil like a sponge and then release inside the body which promotes weight gain. So,
a smart workaround would be to saute them mildly and not until they turn brown. Onions
when consumed as salad in small quantity benefit the most especially in hair problems and thyroid
issues. Overall, it is a powerful food but should be consumed taking into consideration your current state of mind and your affinity towards it.
Finally, its Honey
Since honey’s composition is similar to human blood, it gets readily assimilated by our body. Not just a natural sweetener, it is a storehouse of micronutrients and is hailed in Ayurveda for
it’s medicinal properties. However, since it is a sensitive food, utmost care should be taken
while consuming honey else it can even harm your body. Often we mix it with boiling hot water,
herbal teas or sometimes directly on flame while preparing certain dishes like honey chilli potato
or baking cakes. This is a mistake as honey should never be heated. Forget nutrition,
heat alters it’s natural composition turning it into a glue like substance. Ayurveda equates this
honey to slow poison which tends to stick to the subtle channels of the body blocking them. Infact,
modern studies have confirmed that heating honey produces a compound called HMF. This HMF when fed to bees significantly increased their death rate. When fed to rats, it caused severe kidney
and liver damage. Even in humans cytotoxicity in the mucous membranes, carcinogenicity and lung
damage was reported. So, if you want to cut the extra fat from the body mix honey with lukewarm
water not boiling hot water. Honey can also be mixed in warm milk. Then the combination of equal
quantities of honey and ghee must be avoided. On a safer side, if you are adding ghee to any dish, avoid honey. There is no doubt that honey is a superfood provided it is consumed the right way.
So these were those 5 foods which I felt a majority of us are eating the wrong way on a
daily basis. Knowing the benefits of a food is one thing but eating the way it is meant to be eaten
is a different story altogether. This is one thing Ayurveda presses on. If this post was
